Nearly 200 Rape Cases Reported In Schools Nationwide In Three Months

Between July and September, nearly 200 cases of rape were reported at educational institutions across South Africa, including daycare centres, schools, and tertiary institutions.

According to crime statistics released by the South African Police Service (SAPS) on Monday, 10,191 rape cases were reported nationally during this period—a decrease of 325 cases compared to the same time last year.

General Norman Sekhukhune, SAPS’ crime registrar, revealed that 77 of these incidents occurred at schools, 15 at tertiary institutions, eight at daycare centres, and two at specialised schools. Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal reported the highest number of school-related rape cases, with 16 and 13 cases respectively.

Inanda, located in KwaZulu-Natal, remained the area with the highest number of rape cases nationwide.

The troubling statistics underscore the urgent need for enhanced security and intervention measures at educational institutions to protect vulnerable students.
